Before I was a writer, I was a vet – or perhaps it’s the other way around.
I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I never considered it as a career option. After starting work as a vet, I discovered freelance writing – and just like that, I was hooked.
Since then, I’ve worked for a leading animal health marketing agency, Companion Consultancy. Here, I produced marketing materials ranging from webpage copy and advertorials to press releases, and even wrote a client an ebook on business management with a couple of colleagues.
I now offer a full range of copywriting services to my clients, providing everything from SEO planning and marketing consultancy to medical reviewing and editing.
By combining part-time veterinary work with freelance writing, I can offer clients direct insight into the animal health sector – but I’m just as happy writing about marketing strategies as pet health.

I have two hand-reared cats, Shedrick (named after the shed in which he was found, just a few days old) and Fredrick (rejected by his mother at a few weeks old). These two are my biggest financial commitments, best friends and greatest sources of stress (if you’ve got new tips to stop cats chewing electrical cables, I’m all ears).
I still work part-time as a small animal vet – because who could leave adorable puppy vaccine appointments behind? More seriously, I enjoy the challenge and reward of treating patients in practice – and that translates to my writing too.
Do I write because I’m passionate about every topic I work on? No – I challenge you to find anyone who’s truly passionate about fish food packaging!
Do I do it for money? Well, yes, partly (although there are certainly easier ways of making it).
Really though, I write because I love the challenge.
When I was ten years old, I signed up for sudoku and chess after school clubs (I know, I was a cool kid). Many years later (I’ll leave the exact number to your imagination!), the drive to pick apart strategies in order to grow and improve is as strong as ever.
Working to understand the psychology of your customers, get to grips with the voice and core values of your brand, and create something that achieves your goals is a brilliant challenge each and every time. And working with brands that support the welfare and health of animals? That’s perfect.
